Every play establishes beforehand its own limit which become at the same time its possibility.
Through the play of relations implicit in Tango and Contact improvisation we will recognize our own limits and possibilities, those of our partners and those of these dances. We will technically and irreverently deconstruct movements, concepts and common places to reassemble them again, finding new profane ways to reconstruct them.
We will also play with the possibility of feeling, perceiving and conceiving our own movement as a gestural painting being realized in the empty space. This and other metaphors such as fluid dynamics (with its spirals and vortex) will allow a graceful distance between our identity and our creation, and will generate a greater space for our imaginary beings. In this way a creation and its expression can be perceived as a dynamic play between limit and imagination. This playful approach is an expression of the desire to own these two dances, creating a unique personal synthesis that expresses one’s own self.
Javier Cura is an argentine american multidisciplinary artist. He completed his Masters in Modern Literature at Buenos Aires University (Argentina). He then dedicated himself to the Fine Arts and held several art exhibitions of objects, sculptures and installations in Bs.As, Arg. He has performed, directed and created dance theatre shows in Argentina, Colombia, USA, Italy, Germany and Indonesia. He presently teaches contact-tango, physical theatre and contact-improv internationally and regularly visits England, Italy, France, Czech Rep., Germany and Argentina. He has been invited to teach at ZIP Contact Impro Festival at Orvieto, Italy, at the Freiburg Contact Festival in Germany, at Alchemie Tango Festival in Prague, at the West Coast Contact Impro Festival, San Francisco (USA) and at Phantastango Tango Festival in Germany. His last piece that merges tango and contact in a physical-theatre context was presented in Prague, Dance Theatre Farma Festival, in Italy Terni Festival and in Mar del Plata, Argentina. In 2009, he was invited by Fabrik Potsdam Dance Theatre Festival to create a Physical Theatre and Tango show with participants of his workshops. He is currently living in Berlin where he is conducting a research on Contact Improvisation expression at the Berlin Free University.
Limits and Imagination: a play between Tango and Contact Improvisation

J. Cura unterrichtet in Englisch.

16-22 August, in “Notte Nera” event in Serra dei Conti, Italy
Workshop and Performance led by Javier Cura and Moss Beynon Juckes
(Sotto trovareste traduzione in italiano)
To travel is the creation of a weave, that can tell a texture of stories that make up our life’s journey.
Travel creates with the thread of time: the sense moves as we go.
To travel is also to experience difference and question notions of the familiar. Different worlds, different persons, cultures, habits, spaces and different inner states. It’s from this diversity that we can come back to meet our own selves with different eyes.
Drawing inspiration from our own travel stories and stories we were told, we will re-invent them using images and scenes, fragments and elaborations to create a fictional world into which the spectator will travel into another perspective.
For this end, we will use a diversity of elements from story telling to dance (contact improvisation, martial arts, tango),physical theatre, light and shadow theatre, invented alphabets and gestures, sounds, songs and music, to simple masks, costume making, recycled objects and scenes.
The stories we will mainly focus upon are those that allow us to question the way we actually see, perceive and feel our own known personal worlds
This 6 day workshop will be presented as a performance at the event “La Notte Nera” in the medieval village of Serra dei Conti, in Italy.
“Notte Nerra in Serra dei Conti:” 4th Edition: Since 2006,during the night of the 21st August, all artificial lights of the medieval town of Serra dei Conti will be switched off. The city hosts in its small streets, alleys, piazzas, and museums, a rich variety of spectacles ranging from contemporary theater, to music concerts, film animation, nouveau cirque, installations, etc. (www.nottenera.it )

(www.nottenera.it)

Contact-Dance- Theatre- Summer Workshop Residency
Javier Cura & Moss Beynon Juckes
Bechyně Franciscan Monastery, Czech Republic
22nd till 29th of August, 2010
This will be a week long summer holiday and residency in a historical Franciscan Monastery, in the Bohemian region of the Czeck republic. The Monastery is placed in the little village of Bechyne, over viewing the valley of the river Lužnice, surrounded by its terraced gardens and natural landscapes. This captivating environment offers a special opportunity to focus through play and physical transformations on our creativeness and self awareness.
We will engage our sensorial and emotional perception towards ourselves, the others and the surroundings through contact improvisation, tango dance, martial arts forms, voice work and elements of physical theatre. We will work in the interior spaces of the monastery, in the terraced gardens and in the nearby river and forests, articulating creative compositions that come from within that dialogue, allowing the social and natural environment to resonate on us.
Using play, sounds and songs, objects, lights, masks or stories, we will develop a parade of different energies and characters, relating, sharing and exchanging them.
All these activities will allow us time to enjoy a creative distance with our own selves and to awaken our awareness. This aliveness will gives us the energy to experience, deconstruct and reassemble, thus opening doors to deeper expressions of the self.
In the end of the week we will share our work with our friends, guests and Bechyne villagers through an open performance. This performance is not at all compulsory and each one is invited to participate in the way she/he feels like.
The Monastery; some facts about the place:
The monastery is a gothic jewel reconstructed in the 15th century by the Franciscan order together with the church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. In this way, it is purposely combining masculine and feminine elements, offering to its inhabitants a symbolic spatial completeness.
In the centre of the building there is a courtyard; a symbolic womb from which all living beings and creatures are born. It is surrounded by a windowed corridor with a unique vaulting, which gives it a surprisingly acoustic resonance. This was the place where the monks used to walk, sing and meditate. The entire building is surrounded by what had been in the past the vegetable gardens and orchards and now are the terraced gardens that overview the river and the valley. The river flows besides the village and into farmlands, and natural parks. The Monasterys spatial design and its location seem to metaphorically express the nature that is within and around ourselves. It makes it a special place to rediscover our connection to our primordial natural and animal energies and acknowledge our empathy with all that is a alive.

In Tango we draw from TaiChi and Contact-Improvisation to develop grounding, sensorial kinesis, and to approach the dancing of Tango in an intuitive way.
In Contact-Tango we bring together elements from Contact-Improvisation (lifts, levas, relation of free body to the earth) and Tango (clarity of axis, interplay of balances, rhythm and melody) to create a rich and liberating form of physical expression.
No previous experience is required.
